Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is a flowering shrub that is native to Europe, temperate Asia, and western North Africa. It is also known as Brand Netel in Afrikaans and Irhawu in Xhosa.
It is a perennial plant that can grow up to 2m tall in the summer and die down to the ground in the winter.
Stinging nettle is a common weed in South Africa, especially in the Eastern Cape. It is considered an alien weed, but is widely distributed in South Africa.
