Bristly oxtongue (Helminthotheca echioides, also known as Picris echioides) is a weed that can be found in South Africa.
It can grow up to 90 cm tall and has a thick, furrowed stem with spreading branches.
The branches and stem are covered in thick bristles.
Bristly oxtongue can be removed by hand pulling, string trimming, or hoeing when the soil is moist.
Roots two inches below the surface must be removed to ensure it won’t regrow.
