About this weed

Lactuca serriola, also known as the Wild Lettuce or Prickly Lettuce, is a weed that’s common in South Africa.
Wild Lettuce is an annual or biennial plant with a slightly fetid odour.
It has milky white sap in its stems, leaves, and roots.
The leaves have an angular lobe on either side of the leaf base that clasps and usually extends past the stem. The underside of leaves has a line of prickles along the midrib. The main stem is stiff and green or whitish, and may have a few stiff bristles near the base of the plant.
Wild Lettuce is commonly considered a weed of orchards, roadsides, and field crops.
It prefers full sun and tolerates only light shade. It can be found in soils ranging from rich soils on mesic sites to dry, nutrient-poor soil.
