Devil’s horsewhip (Achyranthes aspera) is a noxious weed in South Africa. It’s a member of the Amaranthaceae family and is native to South-East Asia and Africa. It’s also known as Burweed.
Devil’s horsewhip is a long-lived herb that can grow up to 2 meters tall. It has short-stalked, egg-shaped leaves that are dark green on top and paler underneath. The leaves are often covered in silvery indumentum when young.
Devil’s horsewhip is found in disturbed areas, road sides, gardens, crops, grasslands, savanna, and forest margins. It’s often found in moist or shaded areas near trees in savanna or pasture lands.
